Listen to (Almost) any song for free. Redux
A couple of years ago I built this flash application that allowed a user to search the (at the time) popular website RadioBlogClub.com for music. You used to be able to find just about any song you wanted to listen to, but that didn’t last long. Basically the developers/owners of RadioBlogClub were dicks and they changed the configuration on their server and essentially disabled the search function of my app.
Fast forward a couple of years, and you will find a new website called Muxtape.com. It’s more or less the same idea as RadioBlogClub; Users can upload songs and make a public playlist in order to share their music tastes. I’m actually a huge fan of Muxtape. There are tons of really cool playlists by some pretty cool people. Mainly Silicon Valley/Web 2.0 types.
Anyway, as much as I like Muxtape, it’s missing a key feature. Search. This is understandable, because if they allowed people to search for their favorite music, they would probably get in a bit of trouble with the Record Industry.
Well, as I always say, fuck the police RIAA. I wrote a tiny little bookmarklet to allow people to search Muxtape. It’s nothing fancy, really. It’s just a google search, but I like the bookmarklets, so I packaged it up as one.
Drag this link to your Bookmarks toolbar in Firefox, and then to use it, just click on it at any time.
Using this, I found a cool bonus/un-intended feature. Being able to search Muxtape allows you to find cool music that you wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to. For example, I was searching for some songs by “Black Mountain,” and I found a new (to me) artist called Ratatat. Their remix of Biggie’s “Party and Bullshit” blew me away. Give it a listen.
